Bondage, ropes and tying
When the term 'BDSM' is so widely used to decribe a range of kinks, though not necessarily with great accuracy, and considering that the 'B' part stands for 'Bondage', it would be seriously remiss of me not to pay attention to it.
To an outsider there might appear to be only one kind of bondage; more or less tight constraint on someone's movement through the use of ropes or other devices that restrict her body. That superficial similarity is misleading if you think it's all for a single purpose. The mental needs that it may meet can be very different indeed and it would be a mistake to apply what works for one person to another one.
My own interests in objectification and sexual use find that a tightly-tied subject is (of course) rendered helpless and unable to move, so is therefore easily used and obliged to accept whatever is done without any chance of altering the course of events to follow. Enjoyable though it is for the Dominant, the effect on the mental state of the girl on the receiving end varies hugely.
There are many people who find the constraint itself compelling (see below for Aisling's self-bondage story).
A whole class of rope-artists see it as an aesthetic pursuit all its own, taking huge pride in the skill with which they cocoon the pupa in front of them applying the cords and knots in ways that boy scouts never learned in camp. This is something that I find, like modern jazz, I can admire but not want a lot of myself.
The obvious sexual component of bondage is what strikes most male dominants first. In an ideal world they would all be highly competent and full of self-confidence but a brief glance confirms that the world is evidently not an ideal place.
If your playmate is tied up and can't move, then any lack of self-confidence or ability to naturally control her with a word or a glance is much less important, since she's not going anywhere and can't raise any objections to whatever you are going to do with her. That in itself can be a useful element in making a scene work well and go more smoothly.
Bondage is a highly useful tool in the development of a nascent Dominant or a sub in her early learning stages. The Dom can gain confidence in the use and torment of the sub without needing to have the 'full picture' kept in mind all the time because the physical control of her recedes as an issue.
Similarly for the sub there's no question of where to put her legs or how to position herself and she can focus on serving with one less thing to worry about.
The motivation of the subject - the girl on the receiving end - is rarely simple or obvious. It usually goes far beyond doing it to please, which may occasionally be the case for some Doms who love the bondage part with a the sub who is just complying because that's what he wants. For the majority there's a core compulsion which loves the feeling of being bound, constrained and controlled. These elements can rarely be picked apart but fantasies along these lines run deep and aren't always overtly sexual.
Mummification is classic example of a form of bondage that isn't overtly sexual yet the cause of many a damp patch on the panties as modern girls sit at their desks during a boring day at work and ponder where they would prefer to be. Being unable to move tugs at the same drives as sensory deprivation and a return to the womb, urges that also find outlets in blindfolds, hoods, gas masks and breath control: not clearly nrelated to bondage but springing from a similar place in the psyche.
Helplessness is often quoted as a deeply attractive component of being hog-tied or otherwise being put in a humiliating and immobile position. A large number of subs find this an almost immediate way of being put into 'sub-space', the mental state of submission and detachment that's close to a trance. There are strong interlinks between helplessness and humiliation which can't easily be untangled.
More subtle forms of bondage are often applied by those who aren't hell-bent on instant sexual return. Corsets and tight clothing can be consciously (and sometimes unconsciously) chosen to produce the feeling of constricted movement, along with tight skirts, high heels and other forms of clothing that bind the body. Latex fetishists are not always interested just in the smell and the look of the rubber, the way that the tightness piques the bondage want is rarely unwelcome.
Tight clothing is often employed by Dominants who enjoy minute-by-minute control. It doesn't matter whether it's above or below the visible layer, it's a constant reminder to the sub of who is in control as well as being a reward all by itself. Try taking her out to dinner wearing a tight harness (plugs optional, but front and rear plugged too is delicious) and her breasts bound lightly under a loose top and you will see what I mean, but do make sure that the breasts are still getting a blood flow.
I'd advise anyone who enjoys being the Master to introduce elements of this kind of constraint to their repertoire. You will feel that you have more control, the sub will be put in her place even if she doesn't find the bondage otherwise necessary and nine times out of ten you will find that her inner needs are turned on more than you expect.
The control that bondage implies mixes with a need to be cared for, to be owned, to shed responsibilities and to submit in complex, surprising and powerful ways. In may cases it's an urge all of its own, mingling with and impinging on sexuality, desire and submission but not a substitute for them. Don't underestimate the power of this drive in people who have it.
